Notes from the cloth book.

The cloths we come back to every season, what they are, and why.

Flannel

A woollen cloth, brushed so the surface is soft and slightly fuzzy. It drapes, it is warm without weight, and grey flannel trousers go with almost everything a man owns.

Tweed

A rough, springy wool woven in patterns: herringbone, check, the mixed colours of a hillside. Made for weather, and the longer you wear it the better it sits.

Corduroy

Cotton woven with ridges, or wales, that catch the light. Wide wales are casual and warm; fine needlecord is close to velvet. It softens and fades beautifully.

Oxford cloth

A basket-weave cotton, heavier and softer than poplin, made for shirts that are worn open at the collar as often as with a tie.
